Memorial Day Parades
All events are scheduled for Monday, except when otherwise noted.
PORTLAND: A parade starts at Longfellow Square at 10:30 a.m. and ends at Monument Square. Speakers, the National Anthem and ``Taps`` will follow.
CAPE ELIZABETH: A parade will begin at 9 a.m. at Fowler Road and Route 77 and continue through the town center to the War Veterans Memorial on Scott Dyer Road. There will be an open house at the Town Center Fire Station following a ceremony and wreath-laying.
OLD ORCHARD BEACH: A parade begins at 1 p.m. at the fire station on Saco Avenue and proceeds to Veterans Memorial Park for additional ceremonies, including a rifle salute, ``Taps`` and guest speakers. Additionally, the Vietnam Moving Wall Memorial, a replica of the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington, D.C., is on display through 8 a.m. Tuesday at the park on First Street.
SCARBOROUGH: A parade begins at 10 a.m. at Scarborough High School and proceeds to the Maine Veterans Home for a ceremony.
WELLS/OGUNQUIT: A parade starts at Wells High School at 9 a.m., marches to Wells Corner, then to Ocean View Cemetery. The parade will re-form in Ogunquit at Bourne Lane and march at 11 a.m. It will proceed north on Shore Road to Ogunquit Square and to Ogunquit River Bridge for a remembrance ceremony and decoration of the Fireman`s Memorial, then return to Veterans Park for musical performances.
WESTBROOK: A ceremony is scheduled for 8 a.m. at the Veterans` Circle, Woodlawn Cemetery, on Stroudwater Street, followed by a ceremony at the grave of Stephen W. Manchester, for whom American Legion Post 62 is named. A parade starts at 10 a.m. at Longfellow Street and New Gorham Road and ends at Riverbank Park for a ceremony and a dedication of a Korean War Memorial and two memorial benches.
WINDHAM: A parade starts at 9 a.m. at Lotts Drive near the Route 302 rotary and proceeds to the Veterans Memorial at Windham High School for a ceremony at 10 a.m.
WHAT`S OPEN
State and federal offices will be closed Monday, as will town and city halls.Post offices will be closed, and only express mail will be delivered. Regular mail delivery resumes Tuesday. All major banks and credit unions are closed. METRO buses will not run Monday.
The Maine Mall will be open normal hours, from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Many retailers and restaurants are closed, but most convenience stores will be open. Hannaford and Shaw`s supermarkets are open.
